Kidney transplantation is performed only in patients with end stage kidney failure. There are two types of kidney transplantation. Live related kidney transplantation. Cadaveric kidney transplantation.

 WHAT IS CADAVERIC TRANSPLANTATION ?

When kidney is taken out from a person of brain death either related or unrelated person, between the ages of 2-60 years it is known as cadaveric transplantation.

 WHAT IS BRAIN DEATH ?

Brain death is a complete cessation of all The functions of brain and there is no chance of recovery of the patient.

 ACHIEVEMENT IN KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION

The first live related kidney transplantation was performed in October 1982 in the Institute of Post graduate Medicine and Research (Now Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University). Since then 106 patients have successfully been transplanted In this Institute.

 SUCCESS RATE OF TRANSPLANT

The success rate of renal transplantation In Bangladesh is 96% for 1 year, 86% for 5 years and 76% for 10 years which is almost similar to that of other countries.

 TREATMENT COST

Cost of transplantation includes cost of dialysis for first three months, the investigation cost of donor, and the cost of medication during and after transplantation.

• Cost of dialysis for Ist 3 months Including A-V fistula Tk. 75,000/-
• Investigation cost for donor Tk. 12,000/-
• Cost of Medication during transplantation is 1,50,000/-

Total cost of transplantation at surgery Is Tk. 2,50,000/- only. This cost does Not include doctors and nurses fee and Hospitalization.

Following surgery after three months, There is a maintenance cost of the transplant patient:

• With Cyclosporine Tk. = 15,000/- per month
• Without cyclosporine Tk. = 2,000/- per month
